Nature Detectives Spring Series
Nature Detectives is a monthly program designed for 3 to 5 year olds and their caregivers. REGISTRATION REQUIRED and space is limited. Click here to register online. FEE: $5 per class

September Scavengers
Saturday, Sep. 11, 11:00am-12:00pm
Learn about some of the most infamous characters in natural history – scavengers. We'll get acquainted with some of these "garbage collectors" of nature and find out how they help out all living things to survive and thrive.

October Outing
Saturday, Oct. 2, 10:00am-12:00pm
In a special two-hour class, we'll hike all the way to the shoreline for a picnic and beach combing. Bring a drink we'll supply the food.

November Nocturnal Animals

When we go to sleep at night, many marsh animals wake up. This month we'll learn about nocturnal animals and why they prefer nightlife.

December Dragonflies
Saturday, Dec. 4, 11:00am-12:00pm
How many wings does a dragonfly have? Why are they called "dragon" flies? Learn about these beautiful insects and make a craft to take home.

Bird Walks
Bird Walks is a monthly program designed for 6 to 8 year olds and their caregivers. Participants explore and learn about the marsh through entertaining and stimulating programs. REGISTRATION REQUIRED and space is limited. Click here to register online.  FEE: $6 per class.

Freshwater Marsh Birding
Saturday, Sep. 18, 9:00am-12:00pm
It’s that shift in the seasons again where many of our summer residents leave and the winter populations arrive. We’ll explore this fun time of year in our fresh water marshes and look for the straggler terns that have yet to leave, and search for the new arrivals that might still be in breeding plumage like the Black-bellied Plover. For ages 12 and up. Free.

Robert’s Landing Bird Hike
Saturday, Oct. 9, 9:00am-12:00pm
We will begin from one of the northern entrances to the Hayward shoreline and head south looking for shorebirds. The tide will be creeping in as we look on either side of the trail for birds still foraging on the mud flats or roosting in the salt marsh. It should be a lovely fall day to get out and explore. We will meet at the Grant Avenue parking lot in San Leandro. For ages 12 and up. Free.

Birding West Winton
Saturday, Oct. 23, 2:30pm-5:30pm
Today’s loop takes us by "Mount Trashmore" as we look for both shorebirds and songbirds in this juxtaposition of upland and salt marsh habitats. We will meet at the West Winton trailhead. For ages 12 and up. Free

Lake Merritt Field Trip
Saturday, Nov. 13, 11:00am-1:00pm
Within the shallow waters of this urban refuge a surprisingly large diversity of birds can be found, such as Common Golden-eyes and Pied-billed Grebes, just to name two. We will meet at the Rotary Nature Center and explore from there. Directions can be found at www.lakemerritt.org. For ages 12 and up. Free.

Birding the Bay Trail
Saturday, Nov. 27, 11:00am-2:00pm
Come join us for an exploration of our salt marsh. The plan is to start at the Interpretive Center and hike out to the open bay. Our loop travels through the fresh water marsh, but our focus today is on shorebirds. For ages 12 and up. Free.

Eden Landing Ecological Reserve
Dec. 11, 12:00pm-3:00pm
At this time of year the ponds here should be full of wintering shorebirds. This special walk is always fun and if we’re lucky we might spot an Osprey or Peregrine Falcon, too. Meet at the parking lot at the corner of Clawiter and Arden in Hayward. For ages 12 and up. Free.

Aquarium Workshop for Adults
Sunday, Oct. 24, 11:00am-12:00pm
Caring for fish, snails, and other underwater animals can be a harder task than you think. Come learn how to care for your animals by practicing water testing, cleaning techniques, and getting your questions answered by an expert. For ages 18 and up. $5

Create your own Native Garden
Saturdays, Sep. 18 – Oct. 9, 10:00am-11:30am
Fall is a great time for planting in California. Start a new native plant garden while exploring why it is important to maintain our native environment. During this four-week course, observe the growth of seedlings and take some home for your garden. For ages 18 and up. $32

Owl Pellet Dissection
Sun. Aug. 22
11:00am-12:00pm
Owls eat their food whole and expel a pellet containing the bones and fur which they could not digest. These pellets contain many different kinds of bones which we will dissect out and place in a frame for you to take home from the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. All ages. Fee: $5.

Leopard Shark Feeding Frenzy

2:00pm to 3:00pm
Assist the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center staff during the daily feeding of our shark tank. Learn about the surfperch, lined-shore crabs, anemones and barnacles that inhabit the tank along with our resident leopard shark. New animals are being added regularly! Who is the predator and who is the prey? Free for all ages.

Shoreline Trash Takers

Sunday, Sep. 19, 11:00am-1:00pm
Learn about the litter problems facing the Hayward shoreline and marshes. Then head out on the trail to have a positive impact on this beautiful ecosystem by removing litter. Ages 3 and up. Free

Salt Marsh Scavenger Hunt

Go on a hike to collect, spot and sketch what we can find in and around the marsh to make a hunter’s journal. Meet at the trailhead at the west end of West Winton Ave. For 5 to 10 year olds. $5

Make a fun and spooky Halloween mask of some of our creatures here at the marsh. Then take a short hike to tryout our new masks. All ages. $6.

Weather Watchers
Sundays, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14, 11:00am-12:00pm
Over two weekends learn about how weather works and why it is so important. Using our weather station, learn how to read and monitor weather instruments. During the course we will construct our own barometers and weather vanes. For 8 to 12 year olds. $15

Worm Composting
Saturdays, Nov. 13 and Nov. 20, 10:00am-11:00am
Discover the benefits of worm composting and reduce your carbon footprint. In our sessions we’ll go over how to identify different types of worms, worm composting and practice putting a worm bin together. Get information and materials to take home so you can start your own bin. $10 materials fee due to instructor. For 3 to 8 year olds. $18.

Landscapes are for the land, so marshscapes must be for the marsh. Come learn about the importance of the layer cake that is the marsh landscape. After taking a short hike, join a naturalist and make your own marshscape. For 5 to 10 year olds. $6.

Weekday Activities
Stilts and Strollers Walking Club
Tuesdays, Sep. 14 – Oct. 12, 10:00am-11:30am
Bring your baby or toddler and their stroller for a morning hike along the Bay Trail. During this five-week course, we’ll explore nature using all of our senses. Parents and caregivers get a chance to take a walk at a comfortable pace at several sites with a naturalist guide. $90.

Kids for the Birds
Wednesdays, Sep. 29 – Oct. 13, 10:30-11:30am
Ever wonder why ducks don’t wear jackets? Or what eating like a bird really means? Join us for three weeks of bird exploration as we experiment indoors and then take a short walk to watch birds. Look at feathers, bird beaks and bird feet and make a few treasures to take home. For 3 to 5 year olds. $22.
