, volunteers in the Programs for the Disabled at Sorensdale Recreation Center were selected as volunteers of the month for April 2008. They have volunteered in the program since 2007.
Kathy Cotta and Nikki Justino are master gardeners who teach and provide research-based information on home horticulture/pest management issues. They have made a presentation to the staff and students at Sorensdale on integrated pest management and taught them how to use beneficial insects to balance the cycle of life in the garden in place of toxic chemicals; addressed problems with the fruit trees, teaching staff and participants different ways to take care of the fruit trees that are now bearing fruit and demonstrated and taught everyone new gardening skills. Above all, Kathy and Nikki have always encouraged staff to improve their sustainable gardening practices, and to get involved in gardening.
Kathy and Nikki have donated hundreds of seeds and bulbs that Sorensdale staff has been able to share with the South County Homeless Project for their garden. In addition to being Master Gardeners, they have generously donated produce and honey for the enjoyment of the participants and staff at Sorensdale.
Sorensdale Recreation Center has been very fortunate to have their services and are thankful for their expertise and help following the Greater Hayward Area Recreation and Park Foundation’s $3,000 donation to build new garden beds to benefit the luncheon program at the Center. The Sorensdale staff is very grateful and proud to recognize them for their efforts, hard work and dedication to the Center.
Their picture will be displayed in the District Administration Office as the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Awardee for April 2008. In addition, they will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2008, which will be announced in January 2009.
