The District offers a recreational gymnastics program for youth ages 18 months to 10 years at the Castro Valley and San Lorenzo Community Centers. For specific class offerings, please see our Recreation Guide.
Parent Assist (1.5 - 3yrs)
This is fun time for parent and toddlers to play, socialize and try new skills. The first 10 minutes of class will be a structured warm up and circle time. Our experienced staff will show you the proper techniques to spot your child as you lead them through basic gymnastics activities. For these classes, the goal is to familiarize your child with the basic shapes of gymnastics, i.e., Layout, lunge, bear etc. All these shapes will assist your child in future classes. We will also go over basics rolls, mini handstands, intro to cartwheels, High and Low beam, as well as bars.
Tot & Me Movement (2 - 3yrs)
This is fun time for parent and toddlers to play, socialize and try new skills. The first 10 minutes of class will be a structured warm up and circle time. After these structured activities, we encourage students to go around the room in a circle, trying all the daily skills and learning to wait their turns. Our experienced staff will show you the proper techniques to spot your child as you lead them through basic gymnastics activities. For these classes, the goal is to familiarize your child with the basic shapes of gymnastics, i.e., Layout, lunge, bear etc. All these shapes will assist your child in future classes. We will also go over basics rolls, mini handstands, intro to cartwheels, High and Low beam, as well as bars.
In these classes, your child will learn different types of rolls, mini handstands, and intro to cartwheels. On the high and low beam, your child will get used to walking in different ways, i.e., forwards, backwards, kicking, marching. This will help them build their courage as they get used to balancing. On the bars, your child will learn how to support their own weight, and do a forward and/or a backwards roll on the bar with instructor assistance. For the high bar, your child will get used to using their muscles to help travel across the bar and get used to being at different heights.
Gymnastics Beginning (6 - 10yrs)
Beginners will learn basic skills in floor exercise, uneven bars, balance beam and vault. General conditioning and strength exercises are emphasized. During our floor training, your child will learn different types of rolls, mini handstands, and cartwheels. On the high and low beam, your child will learn the proper way to mount the beam, and get used to walking in different ways, i.e., forwards, backwards, kicking, marching. On the bars, your child will learn how to support their own weight, and do a forward and a backwards roll (Pull-over) on the bar with instructor assistance.
Advanced Beginning (6 - 10yrs)
Adding onto the previous skills learned in Beginning, Advanced Beginning students will be learning new floor and high beam skills while continuing to practice their previously learned skills on bars and vault. To enroll for this class, you must get instructor approval by taking the Beginning level or by emailing staff.
Continuing to add onto the previous skills learned, Intermediate students their training by learning new skills on uneven bars, floor, low/high beam, and vault. To enroll for this class, you must get instructor approval by taking an Advanced Beginning class or by emailing staff.
